Clipping
Energy lost when array DC output exceeds what the inverter can convert, so the peak is simply cut off.
Not automatically a fault
A correctly oversized array clips for a few hours on the clearest summer days. That loss is accepted deliberately in exchange for better inverter utilisation across the whole year — total annual yield is higher with the clipping than without it.
When it is a design error
If clipping exceeds 2-3% of annual production, the ILR was set too aggressively for the tariff. Check the simulated clipping figure in the yield report before signing off a design, not after the first summer.
