Net Metering

A metering arrangement where surplus rooftop generation exported to the grid is netted against imported units, so the meter effectively runs backwards.

Net vs gross

Under net metering you offset consumption at your retail tariff, which is the better deal for a self-consuming site. Under gross metering all generation is sold to the DISCOM at a fixed feed-in tariff, usually well below retail. For a factory with daytime load, net metering is almost always the right structure.

The sizing limits

Most states cap rooftop capacity at a percentage of sanctioned load and of distribution transformer capacity. Those caps, not the roof area, often decide the project size — check them before designing the array.
